(COVID-19): Cleaning and Disinfecting Your Facility

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way business owners think of cleaning and disinfecting. While it’s always been important, now, it’s a matter of life and death, meaning that facilities must make cleaning and disinfecting a priority.

Wear PPE When Cleaning and Disinfecting

Before employees clean and disinfect your office, they need to put on personal protective equipment. That includes disposable gloves, a gown, and a mask. These items should be worn while cleaning and then disposed of when the job is complete. If your employees fail to wear PPE, they could contract the coronavirus or another disease when cleaning, so this is critical.

Cleaning and Disinfecting Surfaces

Use a mixture of soap and water to clean all hard surfaces, including high-touch areas such as door handles and light switches. After you have properly cleaned the hard surfaces, use a disinfectant to remove all traces of potentially deadly viruses and germs. Choose a CDC-approved disinfectant to use against SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19). Other disinfectants might kill some germs and viruses but cannot stand up to the coronavirus.

Make sure the commercial space is adequately ventilated when using a disinfectant. Also, follow the instructions regarding how long to leave the surfaces wet. If you wipe up the disinfectant too soon, it won’t kill all the viruses and germs.

Cleaning and Disinfecting Soft Surfaces

You can follow much of the same protocol when cleaning and disinfecting soft surfaces, including using a disinfectant. However, you also have the option of using an approved cleaner for soft surfaces, such as a specially formulated carpet cleaner. Also, instead of disinfecting, you can launder the items if possible. If you choose to wash and dry the items, use the warmest water setting possible without causing damage.

Once the surfaces are clean, you can vacuum if necessary.

Cleaning and Disinfecting Electronics

Your commercial space is likely filled with electronics, including keyboards and touch screens. Whenever possible, put a wipeable cover on top of the electronics. Then you can wipe the surface throughout the day, removing germs and viruses. However, if that isn’t possible, you will need to clean the electronics. If the manufacturer didn’t provide instructions, use a spray that contains a minimum of 70 percent alcohol to clean the items. Don’t resume use until the surface is dry.

Don’t Forget to Dust

Right now, most of the focus is on cleaning and disinfecting. However, dusting is also necessary for preventing the spread of COVID-19. The coronavirus can spread through airborne particles, including dust. That means if your commercial space is dusty, you’re more likely to have an outbreak. Make dusting a regular part of your cleaning routine to limit the spread of the virus.

Stick to a Schedule

You should stick to a cleaning schedule during the coronavirus pandemic. While you can clean and disinfect carpets and rugs weekly, you’ll want to clean high touch surfaces at least once a day. If you run a busy commercial space with lots of people coming and going, you should clean these surfaces several times a day to ensure your employees and customers are safe. Failure to do so could lead to an outbreak in your facility.

Get Help With Commercial Cleaning

Keeping up with your commercial cleaning tasks is never easy. However, it can seem impossible when you’re living and working in the middle of a pandemic. You need your facility to be as clean as possible, so consider getting help. Hiring a commercial cleaning company can be just what you need to protect your staff.

When you hire a commercial cleaner, its crew can clean your office before or after your normal working hours. You don’t even have to be there while the cleaning team works. The team can also provide tips to help your company stay safe in between professional cleanings.

Start by getting a free quote for commercial cleaning services. You can choose how often you want to get the services, and then you can sit back while the professionals take over. You’ll feel much safer and less stressed when a professional company cleans your facility for you.
